Who we are, our skills and interests

Our mission statement
As co-founders of Unravelled and with over 50 years of experience between us, we support often complex children and young people. We provide specialist advice to improve the life chances of young people with autism, language, learning and literacy needs and their families.

Helen Ortner - at a glance

 

Skills:

 

  • Excellent ability to analyse and identify issues generating creative and practical solutions;

  • Well-regarded trainer and presenter, delivering to a wide range of audiences which have included school staff, parents, foster carers, the police and many others;

  • Extensive experience planning and running language and social skills groups, and developing independence and life skills with children and young people.

  

Interests – I enjoy working with:

 

  • Individuals who are on, or may be on the autistic spectrum;

  • Young people with special educational needs and associated mental health needs, including eating disorders and self-harm;

  • Those who are struggling to engage with education or daily life, including young people 'trapped' in their bedrooms.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • BSc in Speech Pathology and Therapy.

  • MSc in Human Communication.

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Special Education: Autism (Children).

 

 

Ian Abbott - at a glance

 

Skills:

 

  • Using observation and educational assessment authentically and appropriately, to profile the strengths and learning needs of struggling learners;

  • Excellent ability and experience, giving pragmatic, practical learning advice, planning a way forwards for children and young people using multiple, varied sources of information;

  • An engaging trainer and presenter across a variety of audiences, including parents/carers, teachers, teaching assistants and vision professionals.

 

Interests - I enjoy working with:

 

  • Children and Young People with dyslexia and literacy difficulties, using a strength-based, capability approach;

  • Disinterested learners – those avoidant and anxious about maths; demotivated and reluctant readers;

  • Individuals opting out of education, generally, as a consequence of worry, anxiety or poor self-belief.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • BEng in Civil Engineering; MSc in Structural Engineering.

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education and Qualified Teacher Status.

  • Postgraduate Diplomas in: Psychology; Dyslexia; and Practitioner Research.
